A trace of oil on a turbo's compressor fins is normal — the shaft spins on an oil film at well over 100,000 rpm, and a tiny amount always migrates. But persistent blue smoke, oil pooling in the intercooler, or a turbo that drinks oil points to a real problem. Before ordering a replacement, it pays to check whether the turbo itself is at fault or whether the engine is pushing oil into it.
1. The Real Causes of Turbo Oil Leakage
- Blocked or restricted oil drain — the most common cause. Oil returns to the sump by gravity only; a kinked, coked or crushed drain line raises pressure inside the center housing and forces oil past the seals.
- Excessive crankcase pressure — a clogged PCV valve or worn rings pressurizes the crankcase, backing oil up into the turbo drain. The turbo gets blamed for an engine problem.
- Worn shaft/seal assembly — bearing wear lets the shaft wobble, and hardened seals finally give way. Usually the result of oil starvation or contamination, not age alone.
- Dirty air filter or collapsed intake hose — vacuum on the compressor side sucks oil past the compressor seal while debris accelerates wear.
- Extended idling — long idle periods create low shaft speed with high oil supply pressure, slowly weeping oil into the housings.

3. Diagnosis in Four Steps
- Inspect the air intake side: remove the intake hose and check compressor wheel condition and shaft play with a dial indicator.
- Check the drain: drop the oil return line — hard coke deposits or restriction means fixing the drain, not the turbo.
- Test crankcase pressure: a vacuum gauge on the oil cap (idle) should show slight vacuum. Positive pressure means rings or PCV issues.
- Review oil service history: overdue changes, wrong viscosity or debris are the root cause of most seal failures.
